Obituary of Isabel F. Fliegel
Isabel Fliegel passed away peacefully on Friday, June 25th, 2021 at Mountain Valley Hospice in Gloversville.
She was 96 years old. Isabel was born at Nathan Littauer Hospital on May 15th, 1925 to Bietta and Holbert Fear. She was a life-long resident of Gloversville and graduated from Gloversville High School in 1942. After high school, Isabel went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Albany State University in 1946, and a Masters Degree in Education from Columbia Teachers College in 1948.
On July 16th, 1949 she married John Paul Fliegel at the Caroga Lake Chapel in Caroga Lake, NY. Isabel and John were married for 64 years, up until his death in 2013. Isabel spent her career teaching at the Fonda-Fultonville Central School District, where she taught science, all levels of math and calculus. She was the chair of the math department when she retired in 1980, after 22 years of teaching. She was beloved by her students and remained in touch with many of them throughout her life. She was a member of the Fulton County Teachers Association and the New York State Retired Teachers Association. Isabel spent her summers at her camp in Caroga Lake and was an active member of the Caroga Lake community, serving on the board of the Caroga Lake Chapel and as a member of the West Caroga Lake Association. She enjoyed traveling, reading, knitting, playing bridge, golfing, watching baseball and horse racing, and completing crossword and logic puzzles. Her mind remained sharp through the final days of her life. Isabel loved staying in touch with her many friends from all phases of her life. Until very recently, she spoke with close friends Millie Healey and Pat Tuttle daily. Although many of her friends predeceased her, she stayed connected to them by remaining in touch with their children.
She is survived by her daughter: Mary Day, son: William Fliegel (Liz), granddaughters: Jessica Fielding (Eric) and Meredith Miles (Mike), niece: Susan Davis (Michael), nephew: Richard Shaffer (Babara) and four great grandchildren. The family will receive relatives and friends from 10am to 12noon on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville, where a Funeral Service will follow at 12noon with the Rev. R.W. Williams officiating.
Interment will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
