Obituary of Rosa M. Santiago

Rosa M. Santiago, passed away May 23, 2021 at Ellis Hospital with her loving family by her side. Born on January 25, 1936 in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico she is the daughter of the late Santos Santiago and Catalina Torres.

Survived by her loving children Ramon L. (Darlene) Martinez Jr; Angel L. Martinez, Ivelisse Martinez, Wanda (Ernesto) Martinez, and Rosa (Frank) DiCaprio. Her brother Neftali Santiago, and her grandchildren whom she adored Margie, Amy, Ela, Ramon III, Lexy, Chuito, Iris, AJ, Rosa, Efrain, Wandy, Desire, Ninochka, Troy, and Krystal. Survived also by 18 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Besides her parents Rosa is predeceased by her husband Ramon L. Martinez Sr; who passed away in 1993, and her brothers Domingo Santiago, and Pablo Santiago.  

Rosa was a very strong and determined woman who raised five children, and taught them right from wrong. She also taught them to never start a fight, but to always make sure to end one. She was 4’ 10” of pure determination, she was a very skillful artist, and no matter what endeavor she would master it in no time. Rosa enjoyed sewing; she made her daughter’s wedding dresses, and loved to make her girls all kinds of dresses. She also enjoyed cooking, there was not a single Puerto Rican dish she couldn’t make, and make it well, amazing in fact. In her later years when she retired she took up cake decorating, whittling, and she enjoyed all kinds of arts and crafts. Rosa always made everyone feel like family and call her “Ma”. Everyone who knew her is going to remember her friendly smile, which made you feel comfortable, happy, and safe.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010 on Thursday May 27, 2021 from 4 to 6 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 6 pm at the funeral home. Masks are required for all services.
