Obituary of Matilda M. George
Mrs. Matilda (“Tillie”) M. George, 92, of Amsterdam, passed away on Monday January 4, 2021 at Hillcrest Spring Residential Assisted Living Facility in Amsterdam.
She was born June 28, 1928 in Amsterdam, the daughter of William and Gertrude Wood Brown. She was a lifelong Amsterdam Resident and was a graduate of Wilbur H Lynch high school.
Mrs. George was employed by NY Telephone in Amsterdam and the NY State Division of Tax and Finance in Albany, before taking a position at the Greater Amsterdam School District as a receptionist until her retirement in 1990.
She was a member of the Amsterdam United Methodist Church, and Art-Wel Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, for over 60 years. She enjoyed Square Dancing and was a member of the Sacandaga Swingers Square Dance Club. She was a member of the Altar Guild and Nursery at St. Ann's Episcopal Church and the needle point crafters of the church. She was also a member of the Molly Brant Quilter's. She enjoyed vacationing with her family in Colorado.
On June 21, 1953 she married Michael P. George, and enjoyed 61 years together, until his passing on May 7, 2014. Survivors include, a daughter, Karen Damiano of Amsterdam; three sons, Kevin (Lorri) George of Centennial, CO, David (Lisa) George of Chandler, AZ and Peter (Gloria) George of Centennial, CO; a sister Florence Dodge of Amsterdam NY. Seven grandchildren, Nicole, Alexander, Kylie, Kelsey, Skylar, Ryan and Austin; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Matilda was predeceased by her grandson, Anthony Michael Damiano, and her brother, William Brown.
Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam. Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY. A Memorial Celebration of Tillie’s life will be held at a future date for all family and friends to attend. In addition to floral arrangements, memorial contributions may be made to the Amsterdam United Methodist Church, 347 Golf Course Road, Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to Hillcrest Spring Assisted Living Facility, 5052 Upper Market St., PO Box 368 Amsterdam, NY 12010.
