Obituary of Mary J. Hotaling

Mrs. Mary J. Hotaling, 96, of Amsterdam passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at the Edward L. Wilkinson R.H.C.F.

Mary was born on December 25, 1923 in Amsterdam, NY the daughter of the late Raymond and Alta Ehmer. She was a life-long Amsterdam resident and a graduate of Wilbur Lynch High School. She first worked at Schenectady General Electric as a secretary before marrying John Hotaling in 1946 and then worked for many years in the Hotaling Florist family business.

Mary was predeceased by her husband John Hotaling, her sister Betty Faulds, and nephew Alan Faulds.

Mary was a member of St. Mary’s Auxiliary and the Daughters of the American Revolution. While in the hospital auxiliary she became known as the “bow lady”, teaching many auxilians her amazing expertise in making beautiful bows for the annual Christmas in November.

As stated by a dear friend “her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure. She was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.”

Mary is survived by her son, John “Jack” Hotaling Jr. and his wife Pam, three grandchildren; Christopher Hotaling and his wife Maggie of Amsterdam, Timothy Hotaling and his wife Lisa of Middlebury, CT, Patrick Hotaling and his wife Nicol of Lakewood Ranch, FL, and eight great grandchildren; Olivia, Ryan, Gillian, Sam, Marcy, Sydney, Peter, and Athena. She is also survived by two nephews and several cousins.

Mary’s family would like to thank the third floor Wilkinson staff for their compassion, kindness, and excellent care. They could easily put a smile on Mary’s face and helped her look lovely every day.

In keeping with Mary’s wishes there will be no calling hours. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family with interment taking place at Fairview Cemetery.
