Our hearts go out to Chris and Brennan and all who knew and loved Shelly. Her passing came as quite a shock made especially deep to see one so young and vibrant taken so quickly.
We were introduced to Shelly by our son Jon and daughter Alex, as they all attended Amsterdam High School together. We took an instant liking to Shelly and she became a regular visitor to our home. She started calling us Mom and Dad and we thought of her as an “adopted daughter”. Shelly was goal driven and a hard worker so it was a joy to see her achievements: graduating from college; obtaining her full time teaching position; marrying Chris; helping to build their beautiful home and giving birth to Brennan. As our children moved away and our lives took different paths it was only natural that we saw less of Shelly. She will always be in our hearts. May your memories bring you comfort and may her memory be for a blessing.

I hold so many memories near and dear to my heart, from Shelly always being welcome in our home as kids, to her being like a second daughter to my parents, to meeting our significant others and celebrating our weddings together. These are memories I have and always will cherish and although our lives took us in different directions as we grew ourselves and our families, we always seemed to catch up as if no time had passed. Shelly will be missed dearly and our deepest condolences go out to Chris, Bren, Jude, Larry, Mary, Gina, April...all her family, friends, colleagues and students.

Chris and Brennan,
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family through these difficult times. I was shocked when I heard about Shelly. I so enjoyed working with Mrs. Dufel, first as her colleague, and then as her principal. Shelly did touch many students' lives.
One memory that stands out is when Shelly was in my office and we were going over the NYS ELA test scores for her 8th graders. I remember tears in her eyes as she tried to comprehend how the exam was scored. The scoring made no sense, yet I could see the passion and caring nature in her person. Chris, I am sure you heard a lot about those test scores.

We met Shelly when she joined the Dufel family and became a boater. We knew her as a wonderful wife, mom, and daughter-in-law. She was also a dedicated teacher who organized her students to help us with the Mayfield Cemetery clean-up each fall for many years. It was obvious that her students truly respected her. The day Shelly appeared in my life , I was at the end of my rope with a series of Non English subs!! When she said I am an English teacher I was thrilled! She quickly fit into our 7th grade team and became one of us. I am devastated that her life was cut short by this awful disease.
