Obituary of Dewitt Charles Devendorf
Dewitt Charles Devendorf (1928-2020) departed from his loving family on July 13, 2020, just shy of his 92nd birthday on July 28th.
Born to Ida Moore and Dewitt Boyd Devendorf, Charles was a life-long dairy farmer in the Town of Florida. His love of the land and his animals was only exceeded by his love of local and family history. A member of the S.A.R. and decent of the Martin Van Buren family, he was proud of his historic roots on Dewitt Street and Devendorf Street in Amsterdam and his farm’s nearly 250-year historic story on Devendorf Road.
As a lad Charles attended a one room schoolhouse in Snooks Corners where he met the mother of his four children Lela Armer, the girl from the farm next door. He was a graduate of Amsterdam High School with hopes of studying mathematics in college if the war had permitted. His love of learning was passed on to his four children Linda D. Torre Kaufman of Amelia Island, Florida; Dewitt David Devendorf of Amsterdam, New York; Rachael Devendorf Osborn of McLean, Virginia, and Brian James Devendorf of Amsterdam, New York. He also took great pleasure in the accomplishments of his five grandchildren Jason Osborn of Flushing, New York; Kylah Torre of Austin, Texas; Matthew Osborn of Arlington, Virginia; Brandon Torre of Canton, Ohio, and Lauren Jennifer Spaulding of Portland, Oregon. He was recently blessed with two great grandsons Mason Osborn and Kaladin Osborn and will be looking down and smiling at the birth of a third great grandson Torre in November.
He will be laid to rest in the family cemetery on the hill in the Town of Florida along with his ancestors dating back to the American Revolution and overlooking his beloved farm. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday July 21st on Denice Road in the Town of Florida at 2 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY 12010. Please sign the family’s virtual guestbook at www.brbsfuneral.com.
