Obituary of Shirley J. VanDenburgh

     Shirley J. VanDenburgh, 89, of Amsterdam, passed away on Saturday May 9, 2020 at the Fulton Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Gloversville where she had been a resident.

     Born in Amsterdam, NY on November 19, 1930 a daughter of the late Fred C. and Hilda Hausman Pohlman.  She was a lifelong resident of Amsterdam and was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School class of 1950. 

   Shirley was employed for over 25 years at the former Fownes Bros. Glove Mill in Amsterdam.  She worked on the cutting room floor.  She later worked for the former Breton Industries, St. Mary’s Hospital and the former Carl Co. Department Store in Amsterdam.  She also volunteered as  a school crossing guard.

   Shirley was a member of and very active in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Amsterdam.  She was a member of the Heralders Circle of the church, The Faithfull Followers and Big-Brothers, Big Sisters of America.   She was also a member of the Boy Scouts of America Auxiliary.   She was a Bowler for many years and was an avid walker.

     Shirley married Harold VanDenburgh on November 29, 1969.  He passed away on March 21, 2002. 

     She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Diane Frazier, Jeffrey Pohlman, Gayle DiNicola, Keith Pohlman, Sherry Helmick and Mark Helmick. Several cousins also survive.

     Shirley was predeceased by a sister, Gladys Marie Helmick in 1983,  and two brothers, Harold Fredericks in 2012 and Stewart Pohlman in 2017.  She was also predeceased by her nephew Dale Fredericks.
