Obituary of Sybil Rose Briggs
Sybil Rose Briggs, 83, of Gloversville, NY passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at Mountain Valley Hospice in Gloversville, NY, with her family by her side.
Sybil was born in Gloversville, NY on August 23, 1936, the beloved child of the late Myron and Elizabeth Van Buren. She was a 1954 graduate of Gloversville High School and went on to work at Nathan Littauer Hospital. Sybil and Richard G. Briggs were married on June 9, 1957. Richard predeceased her suddenly in 1967. Subsequent to his death, Sybil was a single parent to their children, working in various capacities in transportation, as well as an administrative assistant at St. Mary’s Church, an election inspector, and an adult care giver.
Sybil is survived by her four children, Richard A. (Carol) Briggs of Manlius, NY, Lucinda M. Briggs of Gloversville, NY, Ronald M. Briggs of Gloversville, NY, and Robert G. (Roberta) Briggs of Mayfield, NY; three grandsons, Richard J. (Leia) Briggs of Rensselaer, NY, Nicholas R. Briggs of Mayfield, NY and Alexander R. Briggs of Harrogate, TN; sister-in-law Marilyn (Briggs) Iannotti of Amsterdam, NY, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and two special companions, Rachel and Michelle.
Sybil was recently predeceased by her very special canine friend, Reba, and is survived by her second favorite canine friend, Roxy, who will miss her very much.
A single parent for most of her adult life, Sybil was the matriarch of the Briggs family who was truly loved and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice, especially Nancy, for the deep kindness and loving care given to their Mom.
One of Sybil’s greatest hopes was to see her youngest grandson, Alexander, graduate as a doctor of veterinary medicine in May 2021. As she will not be able to be there, Sybil requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to her grandson, Alexander R. Briggs, 111 Georgianna Drive, Gloversville, NY, in support of his ongoing education or to the charity of your choice.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 PM on Friday, January 31, 2020 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Church of the Holy Spirit, 153 South Main Street, Gloversville, NY, with the Reverend Matthew Wetsel officiating.
