Obituary of James J. DeBerry

Mr. James J. DeBerry, 100, a lifelong Amsterdam resident, passed away peacefully at this home on Saturday, November 16, 2019 with his family by his side.

Mr. DeBerry affectionately known as “Baron” was a veteran of World War II, having served the US Army in the Pacific Islands, retiring from the service at the rank of Sergeant in June 1945.  He was the recipient of the American Defense Medal, the Asiatic- Pacific Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

After returning from the service, James met and married Nancy (Mormile) in 1946.  For over forty years he proudly worked as the plant superintendent at Cushing Stone, during which time he also operated a mini golf course and driving range.  An avid golfer, he also worked as a ranger at the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course.  After retirement, he served on the Board of Election and spent 10 years supervising street re-pavement for the city.  His hobbies included gardening and making bird houses.

James is survived by Nancy, his wife of 73 years; sons, James (Jamie) of Carlsbad, CA; grandchildren Courtney (James) Baraglia, Meghan (Trevor) MacArthur, Lindsey and Michael; daughter-in-law Heidi; great grandchildren Jimmy, Kylie, Brayden and Cameron; and countless nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.  He was predeceased by his beloved son Tom, and well as four brothers and one sister.

A private burial service will be held at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 415 Crossways Park Drive, Suite D, Woodbury, NY 11797.
