Obituary of Minerva C. Maas
Dr. Minerva Maas of Gloversville passed away on Monday October 7, 2019 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloverville.
Dr. Maas was born September 14, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY and spent her early life there. Later she earned a bachelor's degree at Valparaiso University, Indiana, a Master's Degree at Queens College, N.Y. City and a Doctorate (Ph.D) at St. John's University in Queens, NY. She also did additional work at the University of Vermont, Brooklyn College, Hunter College and New York University. She was employed for several years as an executive and senior field advisor for the Girls Scouts in the borough of Queens., New York City. Dr. Maas was also employed by the Children's shelter in Queens. She later taught school, specifically Kindergarten, for many years on Long Island where she wrote the words and music for the songs used in the readiness and movements education programs. Dr. Maas was proud to be able to speak the German language, which was her heritage. Dr. Maas sang in several choirs throughout her life, the latest being at the First Presbyterian Church in Gloversville. She also served as a substitute organist in various churches as needed. She frequently led the singing at the Christmas tree lightings in the city parks in Queens and at other public gatherings. Dr. Maas was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, NYSUT, AFT, BSRTA and other local professional organizations.
Dr. Maas is survived by cousins Roberta Meyer (Mrs. Thomas, Sr.) of Florida and Jennifer Edwards of Alabama, her dog and faithful companion Gracie, along with many other cousins in New Jersey and Long Island.
Dr. Maas was predeceased by her parents Peter and Matilda Frederick Maas, along with her sister Amelia Marie Maas.
Dr. Maas loved dogs and always surrounded herself with several local and loving companions. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, she requested that contributions be sent to the ASPCA at www.aspca.org or any humane society of animal shelter of your choice.
Friends may call from 4pm to 6pm on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St. Gloversville, NY 12078. A service will be held at 10am on Friday October 18. Burial will be in the Union Rural Cemetery Mayfield, NY immediately following the funeral service.
