I'm sending this note with my deepest sympathy to the entire Peterson family.
I'm smiling as I type this with note of my fond, precious memories of an incredible teacher - brilliant - and he was THE best communicator. I hated history before high school but learned to love it thanks to the gift of teaching that was so evident - especially in my sophomore year in World History.
Thank you Mr. Peterson for leaving a legacy of excellence to all those who sat at your feet. What a privilege - and blessing!! We celebrated our 50th Class Reunion last September and as we toured GHS, I stood by J-8 remembering all the great times in your class. You were and remain simply "the" best. My dad always said, "I'm glad I lived when I did." Well, so am I; deeply thankful to have been taught by you. In a class by yourself, you are and were a teacher's teacher. .
I trust, that perhaps right now, you are engaging the Greatest Teacher to walk this earth in a fascinating conversation. May He comfort your family and friends. I'll remember you always and if your mansion's address happens to be J-8 - I'll find you again one day. The best is yet to come.
With fond, memories and always joy,

Zane was by far the most influential teacher I ever had. His love for teaching was so evident & his enthusiasm was contagious. He taught me to love geography and from that, I developed a life long love of traveling, a desire to learn cultures, and to understand the history of the countries I visit. As I embark on a 3 week trip to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam & Laos, I will think of him! Condolences to Diane and the family.

Diane and boys.....
Zane Peterson was easily the best teacher at GHS!. His energy, enthusiasm and (as someone else has already pointed out) his take-no-prisoners persona made learning fun and sometimes terrifying. My late brother Robert, my sister Kathleen and I loved his classes and the times we spent with the family. I know that he and Bob are now having a grand time once again. Diane, I hope you and your boys will take at least a small-measure of comfort in knowing that Zane touched SO many young lives at GHS. May the accolades written here, sustain you in these trying times. At the end of our lives; we each need to hope that we made a difference, that we left the world better than we found it and that our memory causes people to smile....Zane achieved all of that and more. RIP Sir...

Dear Diane,
I was saddened to hear of Zane's passing. I want to speak of Zane on a personal note. I remember his "courting" you. He loved you so much and you loved him so much that nothing else mattered. You were meant to be together. I am so sorry we lost touch as we grew up, married and all had kids of our own. Please know that Zane is resting comfortably in God's hands. This I truly believe. And I know you will be together again in the future. Love, your cousin, Lynda

Zane Peterson was a giant in the Gloversville School District. He was one of the best teachers that I had in my lifetime, and was a great influence in my deciding to go to college.
I'll never forget the Great Dane he and Diane had back in the 70's. I have fond memories of walking that beautiful dog, while at the same time becoming friends with the Petersons. I felt very special being a part of their lives.
Zane loved stories from his students. So here goes:
One day, in one of his history classes, things got a little slow, and some of us were not paying attention to the extent that Zane wanted. One girl in the class started to doze a bit. Zane opened a window (this was on the second floor). I told David Mattioni that no way would he do this. But Zane picked up the girls notebook and some papers and proceeded to throw them all out of the window! David and I couldn't stop laughing! 50 years later, I'm still laughing just to think about it!
After that, we paid attention to the class. I think one or 2 of the above comments were students that were in that class. I won't mention the girls name, but I still remember her!
Zane knew how to get your attention, and learn.
I lost track of the Peterson's after I moved out West, but I always considered them to be my friends. My loss entirely.
Thank you Zane Peterson.
Gods blessings to Diane, their kids and the entire family.

I am so saddened the hear this news. I attended GHS in the 70's and had the privilege of having Mr. Peterson as one of my teachers in my senior year. He was truly the best teacher I ever had. I graduated from GHS in 1970 and there are few teachers that I remember, but Zane Peterson is one of them. He was formidable in the sense that I knew for him, I had to study and study hard. He asked a lot of his students and wasn't satisfied with a poor grade if he knew you could do better. I remember once he balled up my test and threw it at me - which at the time was a shock but what it meant was "you can do better!" You can be sure that never happened again! He was inspiring and made history come alive. There are many great teachers out there, and Mr. Peterson certainly ranks up there with the best of him. Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. He will be missed.

I was so, so saddened to read this news today. Mr. Peterson was one of the best and most memorable teachers I ever had - and that includes my college years. He had a unique approach to teaching history, and instilled in me the discipline needed to succeed in my studies. I remember him, his class, and the many laughs we shared, with fondness. I knew of his love for horses - I think he was just beginning to delve into horse ownership back when I was in high school -- I just wish I could have seen him later on in life so we could both swap horse stories. Rest well, Mr. Peterson - you were a GHS icon.

If anyone EVER deserved to be at the ‘Table of the Elders’ for teachers, Zane Peterson is it...I daresay he was the best teacher that I have encountered in my lifetime. His ‘take-no-prisoners’ demeanor, his ability to stir healthy competition, his ability to motivate, his sense of humor, his sense of fairness, and so many other qualities too many to list elevated both he and the plethora of students who were lucky enough to experience his teachings to new levels. He taught you how to be responsible and accountable for your actions, but most of all, he taught you how to be a better student, and ultimately a better person. Mr. Peterson, RIP. You will be missed.

Dear Mrs, Peterson and family, my friend told me of your loss, I am too, late to tell him how he affected my life. I will try to tell you, words are not worthy or eloquent enough,,,,Mr Zane Peterson was the best teacher I ever had in all of my life, He taught me how to study, he put an A plus on my term papers without reading them. He thought I was worthy ,,he told me I was a smart girl. I was able to study and become a nurse. He was hard on his students but not if your studied and did well, and he told you how to do,it, what he expected. The most important part here, is I lost both parents young and my beloved sister Linda Koenig also an RN ,,,I had to speak, at her funeral, a long eulogy in front of a large crowd of people in Maryland, Linda also had him in school and he ate dinner in my folks house, new teacher in town. He popped into my head as if he was there, said don’t be an idiot, speak well, talk of her, you can do this, and when it was done , I thought yes I did it, again, he told me I was smart, and encouraged me. I am so sad I didn’t tell him any of this, I intended too, I guess too shy and worried about bad grammar. Doesn’t matter, I believe he knows. I am so deeply sorry for your loss,. He was the best teacher so many of us ever had, touched the lives of so many, I hope he knew, I hope he knows. With sincerity ,and love, May you find small comfort in these words of condolence. My deepest condolences to the Peterson family. Mr. Peterson was my European History teacher 42 years ago. I also took his Anthropology class and a law course related to public school issues. He was the teacher whose classes had the most influence on my life. I've traveled to eight European countries to see as many as possible of the historical places we explored in European History. I still refer to the books we read in Anthropology. I went to and graduated from law school. He is the teacher my children have heard me talk about as my favorite. When my own father died suddenly in 1996, I recall Mr. Peterson attending the funeral and he specifically said he came especially to see me. What an important and comforting message that was that day.
Peterson family, please know I appreciated, respected and admired Zane Peterson. He was a gifted educator and I am so grateful I had the opportunity to be one of his students.

Very sorry to hear this. Greatest teacher I’ve ever known and I spent my life working in education as a teacher, librarian, and principal. I’ve seen hundreds of teachers and supervised hundreds as well- Zane was the gold standard. 10th grade Social Studies and 12th grade Ancient History- those were the classes I took with him. What a scholar and what a teacher- none better- the reason I became a Social Studies teacher was this man. After I graduated college I subbed at the HS and got to know Zane as an occasional colleague. He took me under his wing and was both helpful and kind. A truly unforgettable man who changed lives- I know he changed mine for the better. Rest In Peace, Mr Peterson, knowing that you impacted so many lives.

My heart is broken seeing this. While I never had him as a teacher he was one of my class advisors. I used to love talking to him in the mornings. I remember the day I turned 18 (February 26, 1998 I was in a rush to get to school as soon as I possibly good and was standing at Mr. Peterson’s door when he arrived. He barely got his office open before I was rushing him to get me the voter registration because I was 18 and could vote. He said “You are the most enthusiastic voter I have ever seen but you do realize that even though you turned 18 today we are only in February you still have to wait until the elections in November possibly September if you vote in the primaries but right now you can’t vote on anything.” I was like “I know but I need to be registered I have waited my whole life to be able to vote. “ He found my enthusiasm amusing. He always loved to tease me (in a good way). He was a great guy. I offer my sincere condolences.
