Obituary of J. Florence DeTuro

J. Florence DeTuro, 88, of Amsterdam passed away peacefully on Monday, May 13, 2019 surrounded by her family. Born in East Orange, New Jersey she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Anna Filiberto. The family later relocated to Amsterdam.

Florence was employed at New York Telephone, Old Memorial Hospital, GE, and Aetna.

She was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam where she served as Eucharistic Minister. Florence gave communion to the residents at the former Park Hill Adult Home in Amsterdam, she was a sustaining member of St Mary’s Healthcare Auxiliary, and a Past President of St Joseph School PTA in Amsterdam.

On April 9, 1950 she was united in marriage to Dominick A. DeTuro. That union lasted 65 years until his passing on September 12, 2015.  She was preceded in death by her sister Antoinette Bramer and brothers Herman Filiberto and Anthony D. Filiberto Jr.

Florence loved cooking, especially for the holidays; there was always enough food for the whole neighborhood. She enjoyed camping with her family and dogs, and loved spending time with her family, who she always put before herself. She was a wonderful, caring wife, mother, and mother-in-law.

Survivors include two daughters Patricia Ann (Michael) Schuttig and Ann Marie (Karl “Dutch”) Albrecht; grandchildren; Richard (Jodie) Schuttig, Karl (Margaret) Albrecht, Angel (Ted) Butler and Daniel (Tina) Albrecht; many great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 11:15a.m. at Historic St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Jeffrey L’Arche as celebrant.  Private burial will take place in the parish cemetery.  A calling hour for relatives and friends will take place prior to the Mass beginning at 10a.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at St. Mary’s Church.
