Obituary of John D. Rogers
John D. (Jack) Rogers, 86, of Amsterdam, passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Ellis Hospital. Born in Amsterdam on April 8, 1932, he was the son of James R. and Althea Kreisel Rogers.
Jack was a 1950 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and a 1954 graduate of Clarkson University. He served in the U.S. Army Security Agency from 1954 to 1956 in Korea and Japan. He was employed by Mohasco Corporation for 36 years in various accounting positions, retiring in 1994 as Director of Corporate Accounting.
On August 31, 1957, Jack married Sally Greco. They shared just shy of 58 years of marriage when she predeceased him on August 28, 2015.
He was a member of Woestina Reformed Church, Amsterdam Lodge No. 84, F&AM and St. Monica Court #61 Order of the Amaranth. Jack was a Past President of the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and served as an Inspector of Elections for many years. He also served on the Boards of Montgomery Transitional Services and Greenhill Cemetery and was a volunteer at the St. Mary’s Hospital Cancer Center. He was best known for his friendly smile and infectious laughter.
Jack is survived by his children: Elizabeth (Jack) Thelin and Nancy Rogers of Amsterdam, James (Valerie) Rogers of Marietta, GA; grandchildren: Robert (Sarah) Thelin of Amsterdam, David (Danielle) Thelin of Montebello, NY, John Rogers of Lenoir, NC, James Rogers of Hickory, NC, Rebecca (Ryan) Van Biljon of Apex, NC and Stacey Drohan of Greensboro, NC; great-grandchildren: Jackson Thomas Thelin, Emma Grace Thelin, James Luca Thelin, Spencer James Rogers, Vin David Rogers, and Alexander Ryan Van Biljon; Sisters-in-Law, Elmyra Estelle of Amsterdam and Frances Gurdak of Tampa, FL. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday December 8, 2018 at 5:00 PM at Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, with his “Adopted Son” Rev. Kent McHeard presiding. Interment will be Sunday at 8:30AM in Hagaman Mills Cemetery, Hagaman, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday prior to the funeral service from 2:00 to 5:00PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
