Obituary of Elvira Sapia
Elvira Sapia , 101 , of Lakeland , Florida, formerly of Amsterdam, passed away Friday October 26, 2018 at Lakeland Memorial Hospital in Lakeland Florida Following a brief illness
Born in Amsterdam, NY on December 16, 1916 a daughter of the late Demetrio and Angelina Minniti Romeo. She was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
Elvira went to work as a seamstress for Skaperdas Furs, Holzheimer and Shaul, the Bigelow Carpet Mills and General Electric. In 1954, she purchased Skaperdas Furs and later Wagenheim’s Furs, Brenner Furs, the Mary Martin Specialty Shop and Segel’s Jewelers.
She retired in 1974 and moved to Florida with husband Carl Sapia. They continued in business with Carl running Insulcoat Corp., a home improvement company until Carl’s death in 1981. She resided in Lakeland Florida until her passing on Friday.
Survivors include her dear son, Anthony J. Marocco of Amsterdam. Cherished grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Marocco, Michelle (Josh) Berkley, Amanda (Pat) Stewart. Brothers, Demetrio , Fortunato, Charles and Anthony and a sister, Mary. Many nieces and nephews. Nearly everyone called her, “Aunt Elvy”.
Elvy was predeceased by brothers, Anthony, Frank Charlie, Paul, Louis and sisters, Josephine, Jennie, Rose and Dorothy.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 3, 2018 at 1:00PM with Father Pascal “Pat” Ianotti presiding. Interment will follow in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday from 11:00 to 1:00 PM at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam.
