Obituary of Axel J Steenburg
Axel J. Steenburg, 29, of Amsterdam, NY, took his last breath on Saturday, October 6, 2018 after the horrific limo accident that took many lives including the lives of his wife Amy and brother Rich.
Axel was born to Janet and Richard Steenburg Sr. on August 8, 1989, one day short of his brother’s 5th birthday; his brother Rich would call him his birthday present, but his life was a gift to all of us. The magnitude of Axel’s life, brothers, family, friends and his wife Amy cannot be expressed; Axel’s love for his family was tremendous. Axel and Amy King were married on June 30, 2018 and words could never describe their love for each other; they were always happy, whether they were alone or with family and friends. Axel’s family wished to express who he was by sharing the story of the night of the crash, when they came home to pick up Axel and Amy’s dog, to find an unopened birthday card for Amy that they believe Axel snuck back in to the house to surprise her with.
Axel will be remembered as a fun, caring person, his personality was so down-to-earth that everyone who had ever met him liked him. He and his brother Rich were best friends who always looked out for their younger brother Eric, and enjoyed making everyone around them laugh. It was said that if you left their company and didn’t have a stomach ache from laughing you must not have a sense of humor. Axel had many interests in his young life; he always enjoyed working out, and it showed. He enjoyed playing video games, even getting Amy to play along with him. On a trip to Hawaii Axel went deep sea fishing and caught a 305 lb. Blue Marlin which he donated to the Island, only keeping the sword to have it bronzed.
Axel is survived by his parents Janet Steenburg and Richard Steenburg Sr., stepfather Lester Andrews Jr., brother Eric Steenburg, niece Aubrie Steenburg, nephew Owen Christman, and numerous aunts, and uncles.
A Gathering for Family, Friends & the Community will be held on Friday, October 12, 2018 from 3 until 7p.m. at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, 50- 52 Cornell Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010. On Saturday, October 13, 2018, at 1 o’clock, A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the church. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made for Rich’s children’s college funds. This request is made with the knowledge that Axel loved his niece and nephew and would have wanted it this way.
