Obituary of John S. Sowizdral Sr.

Mr. John S. Sowizdral, 88, of, Amsterdam, NY  passed  away peacefully at his son's home, surrounded by his family on September 20, 2018.  Born on July 31, 1930 in Amsterdam he was the son of the late Katherine and Stanislaus Sowizdrzal. He was a graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School. After his graduation John enlisted in the U.S, Air force and served as a Supply Sargent during the Korean War. Shortly after  being  Honorably discharged  he worked for the Union Pacific out West as a Linesman for a number of years. Later he returned to Albany and eventually settling back to Amsterdam where he worked for General Electric of Schenectady for 12 years until his retirement in 1992.  John loved fishing, and he always looked forward to going  North fishing with his late brother-in-law Doug.  John was a Parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church in Amsterdam.

Survivors  include, two sons, John S. Sowizdral  Jr; and his wife Patricia of Canajoharie and James H. Sowizdral and his wife Bonnie of Amsterdam; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also predeceased by his brothers and sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday September  26, 2018 at 11:00AM at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, 50-52 Cornell St. , Amsterdam with the Rev. O. Robert  DeMartinis as celebrant.   Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery, Widow Susan Road, Amsterdam with Military Honors. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Tuesday  September  25, 2018 from 4:00PM until 7:00PM at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Homes, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, 246 Manny Corners Road, Amsterdam,  NY  12010.
