Obituary of Edith Catherine Merendo
Mrs. Edith Catherine Merendo, 88, of Amsterdam, formerly of Hillcrest Spring Adult Home, passed away on Thursday August 9, 2018 at the Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home in Gloversville following a brief illness.
Born on December 18, 1929 in Amsterdam a daughter of the late Joseph and Lucy Knezich. She was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools.
Edith was employed for many years as a Certified Home Health Aide in the Amsterdam area. She also was employed as a supervisor in housekeeping at the former Amsterdam Memorial Hospital. She also worked for a time as a manager of the former Carmel's Diner on East Main St. in Amsterdam. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Amsterdam.
Edith enjoyed playing bingo, traveling, visiting with friends and family and most of all taking care of people.
She married Albert Merendo on August 2, 1947. He passed away on October 9, 1998
Survivors include her loving children, Edward J. (Susan) Merendo of Gloversville, and Lucy A. Merendo of Amsterdam. Her cherished grandchildren, Mary Jo Denoyell, Shawn(Cristy Duma) Merendo, Tammy Merendo, Kim (David) Crandall, Tony (Amy) Merendo. Great-grandchildren, Samantha Gibson, Logan Crandall, Shauna Merendo, Gianna Merendo, Joey Denoyell, Josh Denoyell, Justin Denoyell, Lucas Cole, Valentino Merendo and Mila Merendo. Great-great grandchildren, Caleb Gibson and Harper Short. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Edith was predeceased by her grandson, David Merendo and was also predeceased by her siblings Joe, Albert, Jimmy, Eddie, Lena, Lucy and Jenny.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday August 15, 2018 at 5:00 PM at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY with Father O. Robert DeMartinis presiding. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday prior to the funeral service at the funeral home from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Amsterdam. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Community Hospice of Amsterdam, and St. Stanislaus R.C. Church.
