Obituary of Mary Ellen Kilmartin

Mrs. Mary Ellen Kilmartin, 92, of Johnstown, NY died peacefully on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 with her family by her side at the Wells Nursing Home. Born in Fonda, NY on February 24, 1924 she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Barnard Sweet. On October 19, 1940 she was united in marriage to Dewey Kilmartin. That union lasted 36 years until his passing in July of 1976. She was also predeceased by an infant brother; her son, George Kilmartin; son- in- law, Clifford Hayes Jr.; and her sister and brother- in- law, Myrtle and Richard Little Sr. A lifelong area resident, Mary Ellen attended local schools and worked all of her life. She was employed at various super markets throughout her career as a meat cutter, retiring from Price Chopper in Johnstown. She also managed to raise four children and have a wonderful quality of life. Her home was always open a center for holidays and celebrations and Mary was also the life of the party. During her and her husband's lifetime they helped so many of their extended family during difficult times. Following retirement, Mary Ellen enjoyed being a member of the Gloversville Senior Citizens and helped manage the meal site. She enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Survivors her three children, Kathleen Hayes of Johnstown, NY, Steven Kilmartin of Johnstown, NY and Kristine Allen and her husband Steven of Gloversville, NY; 8 grandchildren, Clifford Hayes III, Erica (Keith) Smith, Steven (Lauren) Kilmartin Jr., Kyle (Jodie) Kilmartin, Bobbi Jo Grignon, Matt (Patty) Allen, Katherine Allen, Jay Allen; 5 great grandchildren, Jillian, Ethan, Zachary, Giana and Olivia; several nieces, nephews and cousins. "May her memories be eternal" Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 10 o'clock at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville, NY with the Rev. Bonnie M. Orth officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Avenue Cemetery, Fultonville. Calling hours will be held Friday evening from 4 until 7p.m. at the funeral home.
