Obituary of Elizabeth Betty Kent
Elizabeth ?Betty? Kent, 82, formerly of Phillips Street, passed away Friday morning at the Wilkinson R.H.C.F. in Amsterdam.
Betty was born in Kane, PA on April 9, 1923 the daughter of the late Homer and Helen Wingard Van Aken. She was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and The New Jersey College for Women, now known as Douglass College of Rutgers University. She later received a master?s degree in education for SUNY Oneonta. Mrs. Kent was employed for many years as an elementary teacher and reading teacher for the Greater Amsterdam School District.
Mrs. Kent had been active in the Second Presbyterian Church and later the United Presbyterian Church. She served as a Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Mary Martha Circle. She was also a member of the Amsterdam Retired Teacher?s Association. Betty was an avid reader and had studied writing. She also had been an active fabric crafter.
Her loving family includes: one son, William Kent and his wife Teresa of Amsterdam; five grandchildren, who were the delight of her life, William, John, Robert, Stephen and Michael Kent; one brother, Dr. John Van Aken of Kent, Ohio; two sisters, Dr. Catherine ?Bobbie Smith and her husband Dr. David of Hamden, CT; and Mrs. Janet Gauthey and her husband J. Richard of Springfield, VA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at 10a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church, 25 Church Street, Amsterdam, NY with the Rev. Roland ?Mac? McDonald officiating. Interment will take place in Fairview Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited and may call for 4 until 7 Tuesday at the funeral home.
