Obituary of Walter B. Hayes
Walter B. Hayes 81, of Mills Terr., passed away suddenly Friday morning at his home.
Born on the family ?s farm homestead in the Town Of Mohawk on August 4, 1924, he was the son of Walter Frank and Abbie Nellis Hayes. He lived in the valley his entire life and was educated here. He operated a dairy farm for many years on Switzer Hill Road, and later for 17 years was employed by the former White Mop Wringer Co. in Fultonville before he retired in 1986.
During World War II, he proudly served his country as a member of the US Army stationed in Europe. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945 as a private first class and was awarded the European Service, Good Conduct and WW II Victory medals.
Walt was a member at one time of the Fonda Reformed Church.
He enjoyed family gatherings that now included his cherished great-grandchildren.
On July 20, 1946, he was united in marriage to the former Mary Wilder.
In addition to his beloved wife of nearly sixty years, he leaves his children; David W. Hayes and his wife Janet of Tribes Hill, and Gaile E. Hayes of Johnstown;
Grandchildren; Liza Uhlinger and Andrew Hayes; great grandchildren; Briana and Christian Esposito and Rachel and Rebecca Hayes; brothers; James Hayes of Johnstown and Charles Hayes of Newport, NY; a sister; Lucille Barker of Johnstown, as well as nieces and nephews.
A service will be conducted on Monday afternoon at 2:00pm at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street Fultonville. The Rev. Chris DeGraaf officiating. Interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, with military honors.
A calling period will begin at noon on Monday prior to the service. Contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veteran?s Association in care of the funeral home office.
