Obituary of Stella M. Carpenter
Stella Birch Carpenter, 86, of Railroad Street, passed away Monday morning at her home.
Born in Amsterdam, New York on October 19, 1919, she was the daughter of Stephen and Margaret Dugan Birch. She lived most of her life in Montgomery County.
She was employed by Lee Dye Knitting Company in Johnstown and later she owned and operated Eddy?s Sweet Shop in the late 1960?s.
Stella lived in Pennsylvania from 1970 to 1979 where with her late husband Milton Carpenter. They ran an antique store.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, baking, canning, making jams and jellies.
In 1932 she was first married to Edward Tretola, who died in 1954, in 1958 she married her second husband, Clyde Speh who died in 1969 and in 1969 she married Milton Carpenter who died in 1984.
Stella was predeceased by a son, Edward Tretola; two step-sons, Kenneth Carpenter and Harry A. Carpenter, Sr.; two step-daughters, Gertrude Potter and Doris Hitchcock and a sister, Grace Lansing.
Survivors include five step-daughters, Helen Quackenbush of Wayne, New York, Grace Blair and Phyllis Calkins of Fultonville, Rhoda Morse of Hudson Falls and Lena Martuscello of Gloversville; two step-sons, Edward Carpenter of Florida and Jack Carpenter of Warner?s Corners, Georgia; a brother, Joseph Birch of Goenauer, New York; two sisters Jennie Jackson of Seal Beach, California and Margaret Mattas of Fonda; a grandson, several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and several step grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville. Burial will take place in the Caughnawaga Cemetery in Fonda. Calling hours will take place on Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Stella?s memory to the Village Bible Church, 2615 State HWY 30A, Fonda, NY 12068.
