Obituary of Marie Mercurio Hastings
Marie Mercurio Hastings, 83, of William Street, passed away Tuesday morning at St. John?s Hospital in Santa Monica, California. She had been visiting her daughter at the time.
Born in Syracuse, New York on June 28, 1922, she was the daughter of Frank and Jennie DeStefano Mercurio. She moved to Amsterdam as a child. Marie was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and later the Mildred Elley School. She first was employed by the American Locomotive Co. in Schenectady, and later for Liberty Enterprises. Marie also taught English as a second language for the Fulmont Development Corporation.
Always a devout Roman Catholic, she was a daily communicant of St. Mary?s Church. She taught religious education there and also for the former St. Joseph?s Church. Marie was a member of the Secular Carmelite Order and the Saint Padre Pio Prayer Group.
In her spare time, Marie loved to garden, and refinish the antique furniture that graced her home. She also created stained glass art works.
On June 30, 1951, she was united in marriage to Edward T. Hastings who predeceased her on November 3, 1996.
Her loving family includes her children, Marie Joseph Jankowski of Rotterdam Junction, Dr. Karen Hastings of Venice, California, Thomas J. Mary Alice Hastings, David J. Hastings, all of Amsterdam, Michael F. Hastings of Perth, and James R. Nancy Brino of Amsterdam; her sisters, Sr. Maria Marmo, CSJ, of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany, and Jeanne M. Donlon of Pennington, New Jersey; an aunt, Angelina Marmo of Albany; six grandchildren; Erin and Kara Jankowski, Carrie Hughes, Katie Hastings, Andrew and Emily Hastings, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Con-celebrated Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday at 11:00 am at St. Mary?s Church, East Main Street. Interment is in St. Michael?s Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 5-8 pm Friday at the funeral home where the Secular Carmelites will recite the Rosary at 4:45 pm. Contributions may be made to St. Mary?s Church Development Fund in care of the funeral home, or in the form of Spiritual Bouquets and Masses.
