Obituary of Earl Hopkins
Earl Hopkins Jr., 85, a lifelong Amsterdam resident, passed away late Thursday at his home.
Born in Amsterdam on July 21, 1926, he was the son of the late Earl Sr. and Sarah Jane Greene Hopkins. Earl was a 1944 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and later received a Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University in 1951. Following high school he entered the US Navy and served as an electrician's mate during the latter part of World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1947 after receiving the Victory Medal, American and Asiatic Pacific Medals and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Earl had a long career with Mohasco Industries and retired as corporate manager in accounting with the firm. He was a past member of the Amsterdam Fish And Game Club, past board member of the United Way, past instructor for the American Institute Of Banking, and the Capitol District Council of Professional Management Association.
On April 8, 1961 he was united in marriage to the former Nancy O'Meara.
In addition to his beloved wife, he leaves his sons, Stephen Kathren Hopkins, and Bruce Denise Hopkins all of Amsterdam; and granddaughters Lauren and Audra Hopkins.
Services are private at the convenience of the family at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. The Rev. Bonnie Orth presiding. Interment will follow with military honors in Fairview Cemetery. There are no calling hours and in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Earl's name to the Community Hospice Of Amsterdam in care of the funeral home. His family is most grateful to Hospice for the care and compassion shown to Earl and them as well.
