Obituary of Nina Vosburgh Champion Frye
Nina Vosburgh Champion Frye, 97, passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at her home in Mayfield.
She was born Nina Bernice Vosburgh on July 6, 1920 at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville. She was the daughter of William and Hazel Vosburgh. Her father was a dairy farmer and entrepreneur, founder and owner of Twin Cities Dairy in Gloversville, and her mother a homemaker. Nina graduated from Gloversville High School in 1938, and continued her education at Albany Business College.
On June 8, 1939, she married Robert Champion, with whom she raised two daughters. In addition, she had a thriving business selling Avon in the area during the 1950s. A lively, warm woman with sparkling blue eyes, Nina was an excellent cook. She was also an active member of the First Methodist Church and a girl scout leader, and enjoyed camping at Piseco Lake with her family. In July of 1961, Bob Champion passed away suddenly.
Two years later, she met and married Willam Frye of Gloversville. Together they raised his grandson, Philip Frye, and were devoted Jehovah's Witnesses. Camping continued to be a favorite activity, and they also traveled together, often to Florida or to Chicago, but also around the northeast and to Canada and Glacier National Park.
Nina had been in declining health in recent years, but was able to stay at home until her death, as she fervently wished, in large part because of the devotion and care of Lisa Coco, her health aide for the last eleven years.
Mrs. Frye was predeceased by her beloved William in 1996, and by Philip in 2013. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Audrey Champion Jones and David Jones of Barneveld, and Betty Champion Jacobs and John Jacobs of Chicago. She is also survived by her husband's daughter Muriel Frye Turner, now a resident of Poughkeepsie, and by daughter-in-law Delores (Fred) Frye of Gloversville. There are numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition, she is survived by Lisa Coco of Gloversville.
Services will be held on Saturday, September 23 at 1 pm at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witnesses, 126 S. Kingsboro Ave, Gloversville. Donations may be made to the Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave; Gloversville, NY 12078.
Arrangements are being made by the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home.
