Obituary of Harold L. Carpenter

Mr. Harold L. Carpenter, 89, of Fonda, passed away peacefully on Monday September 4, 2017 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam surrounded by his loving family. Harold was was born in Tracy, Minnesota on September 30, 1927 to William Carpenter and Alice Maust Carpenter but spent most of his life living in the local area. He attended Canajoharie Schools. Harold was involved with the family farm for most of his life. He had a dairy farm and later grew cash crops. When the farm work was done he somehow found time to do local trucking and for many years operated Carp's Crystal Ice Company, delivering ice to many local businesses. He started doing some logging on the farm which later transitioned to a full time occupation. He was also the caretaker of Evergreen Cemetery, Sand Flats, in Fonda for 8 years. He was a lifetime member of the Johnstown Moose, also serving as governor during construction of the new facility at its current location. He was awarded the Pilgrim Degree after many years of dedicated service to the organization. He was also a former member of the Town of Mohawk Fire Department. Harold enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was known as "Old One Shot" by his hunting club because that's all it took to get his deer. He greatly enjoyed gardening and spent much of his time growing vegetables to give away. He always found time to help anyone that needed a helping hand. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Suzanne (Skandera) Carpenter, his children Clayton Carpenter (Kathie), Sharon Darrach (Nelson), and David Carpenter (Beth). He will be greatly missed by his six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of whom looked forward to their time with him. He is also survived by his brother, Emery, sister, Yvonne and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Robert and Duane, and brother-in-law Tom Skandera. A Celebration of Harold's life will be held on Thursday September 7, 2017 at 11:00A.M. at the Jackson and Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St. Fultonville, NY. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Sand Flats, Fonda, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday (Today) from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
