Obituary of Barbara J. Engel

Barbara J. Engel, 85, of Amsterdam, NY, passed away on Wednesday, September 27, 2017. Born on December 28, 1931, in Glens Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Snyder and Laura Hallenbeck. She graduated from the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School and went on to obtain her Associates Degree in Art from Fulton Montgomery Community College. She was a long time member of the Cranesville Reformed Church. Barbara enjoyed gardening, reading, puzzles and was quite talented at painting which she truly enjoyed. Bird watching was a favorite past time and she loved cardinals which also happened to be her favorite color as well. She also admired the Royal Family and loved anything British, especially the Queen. She loved being Mom to Amy, Bob and Tom and will be remembered for hosting many Halloween and birthday parties at their Cranesville home. She made the best potato salad and deviled eggs that no one in the family has yet to replicate even though they have tried on many occasions. Barbara loved sitting by the fire with family members and reminiscing, an activity passed down to her sons. Barbara loved spending time with her grandsons when they were little and she would pick them up from school every Wednesday for a rousing game of charades and grilled cheese sandwiches. They fondly remember their annual Christmas Cookie baking event. She also lovingly followed her granddaughter's gymnastics career and loved watching her perform. Barbara is survived by her sons, Robert (Sun) Burlington, Vermont, and Tom (Donna) Hagaman, NY, her grandchildren Amber Reichel, Christopher Reichel, Matthew Reichel, Mason Reichel and Maddison Reichel, her sister Janet (Theodore) Dick, her brother David (Lois) Snyder, and her sister in laws Deanna Smith & Mary Lou Wierzbowski. Many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Barbara is predeceased by her first husband Edward Reichel, her second husband George Engel, her daughter Amy Reichel and her parents Arthur and Laura Snyder. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by family and friends. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, October 5th, 2017 from 5-7pm at the funeral home. A funeral Service will be held on October 6th, 2017 at 10:00am at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home; 171 guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. Burial will immediately follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill, NY. In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution may be made to the Cranesville Fire Department, 167 Riverview Drive, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
