Obituary of Robert W. Smith
Rev. Robert W. Smith, 86,of Broadalbin,NY, passed away on Thursday October 5, 2017 at the Fulton Center in Gloversville, NY with his loving family at his side.
Born on April 25, 1931 in Stamford, CT, the son of William G. Smith, Jr. and Marion Oddy Smith. He grew up in Noroton, CT and graduated from Darien High School in 1949.
Robert received a B.S. in Economics from the University of CT in 1953. He then attended the Wesley Theological Seminary in Westminster MD and received his Bachelor's Degree in Sacred Theology and a Masters of Divinity in 1956. He also received a Masters of Arts in Education from the College of St. Rose in 1970 and received various teaching certificates from SUNY Cortland and SUNY Albany.
Rev. Smith was first employed as a Methodist Minister from 1956 to 1964 serving various churches in Maryland, Fort Johnson, NY, Speculator/Wells/Lake Pleasant, NY, Salem/Shushen/West Hebron, NY and Broadalbin, NY. He then went on to teach at the Wheelerville Union Free School in Caroga Lake, NY, theTryon School for Boys in West Perth, NY, and later at the Theodore Roosevelt Jr. High School in Amsterdam, teaching from 1964 to 1970. He retired after 20 years working for the NYS Department of Education, Bureau of School Health Services in 1991.
He was a member of the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Broadalbin Volunteer Fire Department, Broadalbin Kenyetto Lodge #599, F & AM, Fish House Lodge # 298 F & AM in Northville, NY, and Cyprus Shriners. He was also in the US Air Force Reserves serving as First Lieutenant.
Robert enjoyed wood-working, clock repair and restoration, photography, computer programming. He also enjoyed playing/teaching chess with his grandchildren and after time, never could beat his grandson Andrew. He enjoyed camping and above all spending time with his family.
Rev. Smith married Janice Selby Smith R.N., on October 31, 1959. In addition to his loving wife survivors include his children, David R. Smith of Broadalbin, William R.( Nelda) Smith of Wetmore, Michigan, Tracy (Terry) Goodemote of Queensbury and Heather (John) Carangelo of Ballston Lake, NY. Eight grandchildren, Jesse and Selby Smith, Birch Smith, Megan (Eric) McMahon, Andrew and Christopher Goodemote and Kara and Matthew Carangelo. Two great-grandcildren, Ryan and Belle McMahon. Cousin Marion (Wayne) North and Family and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and June Selby. A Brother-in law, Robert Spiers and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Marion and a sister, Marion Spiers.
Funeral services will be held on Monday October 9, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church of Broadalbin, 67 North Main St. Broadalbin, NY 12025. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday October 8, 2017 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the funeral home.
