Obituary of Gladys Alberta Prentice

Gladys Alberta Prentice passed away on May 21, 2023, at Nathan Littauer Nursing Home with her loving family by her side. Born in Stony Creek, NY on April 14, 1933, she is the daughter of the late Joseph Edwin and Ruth Electa (Mattison) O’Dell.  

Gladys is survived by her three children: Ericia Prentice Mercer (husband Scott) of North Carolina, Terry Prentice (wife Jennifer) of Palatine Bridge, NY and Roger Prentice (wife Mary) of Gloversville, NY. She leaves behind her grandchildren, Rebecca Prentice, Matthew Prentice (wife Jamie), Julianne Prentice, Ryan Prentice and Katelyn Prentice as well as sisters, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Grant Mattison Prentice who passed away on December 12, 2018.  

Gladys grew up in Lake George, NY. She received her nurses’ training at Nathan Littauer School of Nursing and graduated to become an RN in 1954. She was an active member of Freemont Methodist Church in Gloversville where she sang in the choir, was on various committees and taught Sunday School and VBS for many years.  She particularly enjoyed being a member of the Gloversville Senior Center Choir, Band and Komedy Klub. Gladys’ greatest joy was helping people both as a nurse, neighbor and friend. She was a constant and loyal friend, always putting others before herself. She would often visit shut ins and attempt to brighten their day. Most people will remember Gladys because of her happy nature, her warm smile and her genuine concern for others’ well-being. In addition to her family and friends, Gladys loved baking and growing flowers and taking daily walks around the park where she would greet everyone along the way.  

A Memorial Service will take place on June 23, 2023 at 1 pm at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871.  

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville, NY 12078.  

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Gladys can be made to the James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society, 437 Nine Mile Tree Road, Gloversville, NY 12078.  

The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care Gladys received from the staff at Pineview Commons Assisted Living where she resided for the past five years.
