First my condolences to the Miller family, Dale and John Jr. sons of John Sr. and the late Lorraine Miller, and their immediate families. Thank you all for sharing your messages, what a pleasure to see and read how John Miller touched us all in a multitude of ways during his lifetime.
I met Mr. and Mrs. Miller as I was being introduced to Dale Miller my new roommate at the Culinary Arts Institute of America, Hyde Park. His family mentioned coming up to their home for Easter. Time passed and the Easter weekend arrived. Hesitant, I accepted celebrating Easter Sunday 1978 with the Miller Family. During my two year vocation endeavor at the Institute. I got to know Dale and his family as they were like my own family, calling them “my east coast family.” Mr. Miller Sr. always checked in with me upon my many visits, truly concerned, then telling me his many stories, jokes and parodies of current events and of his youth. His work at the canal always interested me, he always told me of his community contributions, and history of Tribes Hill. Just like Mrs. Miller and I being early morning risers, drank coffee and talked about life and what matters usually into the hours.
Even now I can remember the heavenly smells on a cold winter day, entering their sun room in which hunting trophy’s hung, family photos on tables and duck decoys siting about with a large pot belly stove warming the room. This was John Sr.’s room. The smell of cedar and apples in the air. Now thinking about it, Mr. Miller Sr. use to make the best hard apple cider. Spring would come around and we go out to pick fiddle ferns at just the right time. He was always in tune with nature, hunting, gardening , impressively having a little area of brush in his back yard that grew an abundant amount of asparagus, just like he would perfectly have ripped tomatoes and other prized offerings from the garden in the warmer season.
I know Mr. Miller Sr. to be humble, generous, and loving individual. I know he loved his boys, Dale and John Jr. and especially adored his beloved wife Lorraine Miller. His love for Mrs. Miller was magical and very endearing, together they had a special chemistry.
He was a devoted worker, volunteered to his community with such devotion.. One occasion leaving my car at the Miller residence to travel west for holiday, only to come back to discover my car had been buried in at least 6 ft of snow, John Sr. had spent hours shoveling all the snow and freeing my car, prior to my arrival back from the airport, luckily I was able to head back to school with no issue.
As I read the tribute to Mr. Miller Sr. In The Recorder, “Friends, family remember Tribes Hills John Miller World War II veteran-‘Loved by everyone around him‘,” by Ashley Onyon. He truly was a pillar of the community who loved his country and gave back abundantly. He was a courageous veteran whom set priorities thus never cowering in accepting a lesser of an outcome. Ernest Hemingway put it perfectly, “Cowardice...is almost simply a lack of ability too suspend functioning of the imagination”. Yes, he was loved by everyone around him because he new to gave unconditionally and love in return. He had a healthy apatite for people and life, assuring comfort and brotherly support. You’ll be greatly missed Mr.John Miller Sr. And a fine example of what is possible of the human spirit. Thank you for being a part of my life.
Respectfully yours, John G Holbert

Poppy,
I really don’t have words to describe how much you meant to me and my boys! You were the best Pop I could have ever asked for! Any chance that Nick got to brag about his Great Poppy, he did! You lived an amazing life! You are going to missed beyond belief. I can’t wait to see you again and have a dinner date with you! Love, your most beautiful granddaughter ❤️
